<p>The unit was created as 302nd Troop Carrier Wing at McChord AFB in June 1949 with the C-54 and C-82. The 302nd was mobilized in June 1951 and inactivated immediately. The wing reformed at Clinton County AFB, OH in June 1952 with C-46s initially and later C-119s. The 302nd was redesignated a Tactical Airlift Wing in July 1967 and Special Operations Wing in July 1970, with the A-37B and U-3A. Designation changed back to TAW in August 1971 when the unit moved to Lockbourne AFB, OH (later Rickenbacker AFB) with the UC/C-123K. The wing relocated to Peterson AFB with the C-130B assigned in October 1982, and upgraded to the C-130E before commencing transition to the C-130H in October 1993.
